Ensure alarms are installed in appropriate locations. Smoke alarms should be kept away from kitchens and bathrooms where cooking fumes and steam can trigger false alarms.
Clean alarms regularly to remove dust or debris that could cause false alarms.
Consider installing heat alarms in areas prone to false alarms, such as kitchens and garages.

Ionisation smoke alarms are more responsive to smoke with smaller particles such as those found in fast flaming fires whereas optical alarms are more responsive to the dense smoke found in slow smouldering fires. Following official guidance, at FireAngel we no longer manufacture ionisation alarms.

For smoke alarms install at least one on every floor of your home, inside bedrooms and in hallways. For CO alarms install one in rooms near fuel-burning appliances. Find out which alarms are best for your property by using our help to buy quiz.

Smoke alarms detect the presence of smoke in the air and are designed to provide an early warning in case of fire. They are typically installed in living areas, bedrooms, and hallways.
Heat alarms detect rapid increases in temperature and are ideal for use in kitchens, garages, and areas where smoke might not be a reliable indicator due to fumes or steam.

In the UK, landlords must install at least one smoke alarm on every storey of a rental property where there is a room used as living accommodation. In addition, a carbon monoxide alarm must be fitted in any room with a solid fuel-burning appliance.

“For ease of installation and maintenance these are now my go to fire alarms. First they use AA batteries, so no fiddling about with those annoying clip on 9V batteries and the 5 year battery life seems ideal. Second the hardware supplied to screw to the ceiling is perfect, just right for the job. Third they are easy to test with the push of a large button.”
